from www.telegram.com – Rob Gronkowski is a certified force in the red zone. He was only red-faced yesterday.

The second-year tight end found himself offering a public explanation for his role in an embarrassing — but seemingly harmless — episode while the Patriots were off last weekend.

Gronkowski returned to Arizona, where he attended college, to hang out with friends, one of whom introduced him to porn star BiBi Jones. That led to some photos of Gronkowski, sometimes sans shirt, posing with Jones, who was clad in his No. 87 Patriots jersey.

Oops.

Jones, 20, posted the pics on Twitter for the viewing pleasure of her 100,000-plus followers. That was apparently done with the consent of the 23-year-old Gronkowski as he was hoping to boost his own account.

Double oops.

The Patriots, to no one’s surprise, took notice, leading to a chat between owner Robert Kraft and Gronkowski upon the big guy’s return to New England.

“I didn’t intend anything to hurt the reputation of anyone on the New England Patriots or on behalf of Robert Kraft,” a clearly nervous Gronkowski told reporters while sounding as if he were reciting lines from a script.

“It was just a simple picture. That’s all. I’m here now. I’m just here to talk about the Pittsburgh Steelers and the big game this weekend.”

But Gronkowski did indeed return to the subject of his weekend escapade, admitting he regretted his decision, and agreed it was all part of the learning process that comes with being a public figure.

“I didn’t mean to hurt no one,” he said. “I love this organization, love being part of it here and everything, and definitely not trying to put anyone on the map or anything. Like I said, I’m just here for the Steelers. All I care about is the Steelers, and all I care about is this team and being here with the team this week and practicing and getting better every day.”

For what it’s worth, Jones, speaking on 98.5 the Sports Hub on Monday, called Gronkowski “a gentleman” and suggested “maybe something will happen in the future.”

Yeah, and Theo will be back running the Red Sox next week.

Interestingly enough, photos of Gronkowski cavorting with some Playboy bunnies who were clad in skimpy golf wear during an event at Wedgewood Pines Country Club in Stow earlier this month didn’t cause a stir at One Patriot Place.
