ROSEVILLE, Mich. – A Roseville High School teacher turned herself in to police Monday morning after police accused her of having sex with her teenaged student aide last school year. Janelle Batkins, 42, of Harrison Township was arraigned at the 41B District Court in Clinton Township on two counts of third-degree criminal sexual conduct.
Police said she allegedly had an affair with a 17-year-old boy from last summer to the end of the school year.
Batkins is married, with two children, and was the French teacher at Roseville High. School officials said she no longer works for the district. ?My son is 17, I don?t like it at all,” said parent Dan Strauss. “She belongs behind bars.”
The boy?s mother contacted the Roseville police in July after finding evidence of the relationship on her son?s computer, said police.
The teen told police that he consented to having sex with her in when he was 17 years old, in places such as her home and inside a car.
Most of the contact was made at her home apparently in Harrison Township. There was indication that there was a vehicle that was used for a sexual encounter, that being in Roseville,? said Macomb County Sheriff Mark Hackel.
Police said that the boy could have consented to the relationship at his age, if the teacher was not in a position of authority.
Investigators said they have interviewed faculty members and other students as well as confiscated their e-mails, instant messages and phone records during the investigation.
The foreign language teacher faces up to 15 years in prison, if convicted on both counts, police said.
?Well, we hear it so much on the TV every place, so you know, I think this is like any other place, unfortunately,” said parent Joyce Tomaskovic.
Batkins was allowed to post bond and be released. But she is not allowed to have contact with any boys except for her sons.
