Doctor, I said sinus, not anus.
Chicago- A Carol Stream doctor has pleaded guilty to groping a patient’s breast while treating her for a sinus problem, DuPage County authorities said Wednesday.
Dr. Angelo Consiglio, an ear, nose and throat specialist, also made a “lewd remark” to the 30-year-old patient during the Jan. 5, 2004, office visit, then later was secretly recorded during two phone calls talking about the incident with the woman, prosecutors said.
After admitting to the misdemeanor charge, the 48-year-old Consiglio was sentenced to one year of probation, fined $100 and ordered to pay $1,000 in restitution to the victim.
The doctor also faces possible loss of his medical license. DuPage County authorities have asked state regulators to suspend his license because of the criminal conviction.
“He’s a doctor and he’s got to be held to a higher standard. There’s no excuse for his conduct,” DuPage County State’s Attorney Joseph Birkett said, calling Consiglio’s actions “outrageous.”
Consiglio was treating the woman for a sinus condition in his Carol Stream office when she became dizzy and almost lost consciousness, prosecutors said. The doctor reached under her sweater and groped her breast, then, according to prosecutors, told the woman: “nice t—, my compliments to your other doctor.”
The woman filed a complaint the next day with police, who arranged to secretly record two phone conversations between her and the doctor, Assistant State’s Attorney Michael Botti said. Consiglio made incriminating statements during those calls, Botti said.
Investigators from the state’s Department of Financial and Professional Regulation will review the case and Birkett’s request, a spokeswoman said. Consiglio could face sanctions ranging from a reprimand to the suspension or revocation of his medical license, spokeswoman Susan Hofer said.
