South Africa- www.iol.co.za – To the cops it said brothel. There were women arriving at all hours of the night, dodgy characters slinking in the shadows.

Another Ekurhuleni suburban bordello just waiting to be busted, they thought.

So, in went the undercover cop. He knocked on the door of the Mayberry Park house and asked for the services of a girl.

This is not that kind of place, he was told, and was sent on his way.

Puzzled, but undeterred, the Ekurhuleni metro police’s Crime Prevention Task Team swooped yesterday afternoon.

What they found is a first for Ekurhuleni.

There were the women in skimpy clothes, dildos and other sexual paraphernalia that metro police spokesman Wilfred Kgasago didn’t want to elaborate on further. The usual contents of a whorehouse – plus modems, webcams and cable feeds.

The metro cops had stumbled on their first pay-to-view porn house, said Kgasago.

The Crime Prevention Task Team arrested seven women aged between 20 and 30, a manager and a man who claimed to be the owner of the operation.

What investigators believe was happening was that clients using the internet would log in and watch the ladies perform sexual acts through webcams.

“It was expensive, they were charging the equivalent of R14 a minute,” said Kgasago.

They were raking in at least R120 000 a month.

The girls were busy, working shifts through the day and night.

One of the rooms was used as a hub, where police found a dozen modems, Kgasago said.

There were four chatrooms, each divided into three cubicles, in which the women operated.

Police believe they had been in business for at least a year.

Suspicious neighbours had alerted the police.

The metro police had to get creative in charging the occupants.

“The will be facing various charges in terms of the Films and Publication Act, the SA Revenue Service Act, and the city development, buildings and health by-laws of the Ekurhuleni metropolitan municipality,” explained Kgasago.

The by-law infringements had to do with the alterations made to the building, the cubicles and the fact that the house was not in a business-zoned area.

Police are investigating further, and the nine suspects are to appear in court.
