Washington, D.C. from www.tvpredictions.com – — DIRECTV and Time Warner Cable are both moaning that adult PPV revenues are falling due to the increased availability of porn material on the Internet. Comcast is also acknowledging that PPV revenues are down, but the cable operator is refusing to say if Internet porn is a factor.
Well, guess what? It’s not. The suggestion that porn on the Net is having a dramatic impact on TV porn revenues is more evidence that some TV executives need to file for intellectual bankruptcy.
Porn has been on the Internet for years now and we’re supposed to believe that suddenly it’s hurting PPV buy rates? Come on, guys, tell us another one.
No, the real reason why adult PPV rates are falling is that TV providers treat their ‘adult’ customers like trash. That’s right. Trash.
For starters, the PPV adult movies are relegated to the back of the channel lineup, usually in the 600s or 700s, TV’s equivalent’s of the sleazy back door entrance required for strip clubs and other gentlemanly pursuits.
But to be fair, that’s been the case for some time. The real problem now is that satellite and cable operators are still showing adult films in grainy, limp-colored standard-definition. While HD adult films have been around for years, the TV providers have not upgraded their adult lineups with HD offerings.
Once, that was a silly thing to do, but now it’s costing them money. You can get adult films now all over the Net (and on Blu-ray) in high-def, but not on your TV service of choice. Does that make any sense?
Come on, DIRECTV and Time Warner, even adult viewers have standards. They won’t keep ordering those lousy SD adult films at outrageous prices if they can find one in high-def on the Net or on Blu-ray disc.
Satellite and cable operators, stop treating your adult viewers like trash and you might return to making some cash.
