If you believe the Atlantic City Press, between 15,000 to 20,000 fans of adult entertainment were expected to pack the Trump Taj Mahal over porn’s three-day weekend which just ended.
According to the blurbs, The Exxxotica Expo was making its Atlantic City debut at the same time that tourism officials are trying to rebrand the casino town as a more upscale vacation destination through the splashy, $20 million “Do AC” advertising campaign.
The Atlantic City Alliance, the casino-funded marketing coalition that created the “Do AC” theme, even embraced Exxxotica’s presence.
“Clearly, it has a defined audience. It is a visitor draw,” alliance spokesman Jeff Guaracino said of Exxxotica. “Look, Atlantic City has something for everyone.”
Local businesses hoped to cash in on the crowds by hosting events that tie in with the sex expo. Local nightclubs planned after-parties that included appearances by some of the Exxxotica porn stars. Among those clubs were the Dusk nightclub at Caesars Atlantic City and the Diving Horse Gentlemen’s Club and Steakhouse on Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Boulevard.
Club owners said they were inundated with requests and phone calls once the Expo hit town.
I got the following email from an industry insider who’s tracking the progress of AB 332 in Sacrament. He writes:
“The porn industry has been telling everyone in California that they are
going to pack their bags for greener pastures if they are required to use
condoms. Yet right next door to Porn Valley we see other counties, and
cities passing similar laws when it became apparent that porn might be
headed their way. Simi Valley, Moorpark, Thousand Oaks, and now Ventura
County as a whole is looking into legislation to keep porn away.
“So if Porn Valley’s nearest neighbors don’t want them, and this is still in California, one of only two states where it is explicitly legal to film
porn, what makes the industry think that anyone else wants them.
“Several people have alluded to other municipalities courting the industry to come to their towns, but of course nobody will name a single place, or person from that place that is making these alleged offers. Eli Cross made this assertion in front of the Assembly in his testimony regarding AB332.
“I would like to know the name of one single person, a mayor, a governor, a
councilman, or any city official that has courted the porn industry. I
call bullshit on this claim. Eli, do you have a name for us? (cricket
