[www.news.ok.com]- An adult novelty store and a strip club were destroyed by fire Friday afternoon after a collapsing roof made it too dangerous for firefighters inside the businesses.

Christie’s Toy Box and Fantasy Island, both in the Walnut Creek Shopping Center near NW 10 and MacArthur, were gutted after a fire tore through.

Deputy Fire Chief Cecil Clay said the fire department was called to the shopping center about 3:40 p.m. to investigate smoke at the building.

Crews evacuated the businesses because of heavy smoke conditions and began fighting the fire, Clay said.

Firefighters on the roof, however, noticed that the roof was deteriorating quickly and rooftop air conditioning units had begun to drop in, making the building unsafe.

“We had to evacuate and go into defensive mode,” Clay said. “That’s why the damage was so catastrophic.”

While the cause of the fire is under investigation, Clay said, it appears the fire was concentrated in an area with a lot of empty space between the roof and another hard deck above the stores. No injuries were reported.
