HOLLYWOOD, Calif. (KABC) — There’s no shortage of original names for all the retail shops that line a stretch of Melrose Avenue in Hollywood, but there’s nothing quite like the “FUK U Lingerie – Love Shop.”

While some applaud the audacity of the retailers, others are concerned. Neighbors said the name is offensive and doesn’t belong on a street close to schools.

“People have been very upset about it in the neighborhood, parents, schools and synagogues,” said Los Angeles City Councilman Paul Koretz [pictured], who represents the area.

He said his staff has tried unsuccessfully to try to get the shop owner to consider another name.

“We’re really not able to constitutionally to regulate content on a business sign,” Koretz said.

But other local retailers have come out in defense of the lingerie shop.

“The councilman comes over here complaining about something, in my opinion, frivolous, but he’s not doing anything about the trash,” on the street, said one retailer, who identified himself as Alan K.

The employee at the shop said the owner is out of the country but plans to be there later this week for the grand opening.

The name of the shop is in full compliance with city ordinances.
