Vancouver sex trade workers to be offered media training prior to Olympics

VANCOUVER, B.C. — Vancouver’s sex trade workers will be offered media training prior to the 2010 Olympic Games.

Kerry Porth with the Prostitution Alternatives Counselling and Education Society (PACE) says it’s important for sex trade workers to know their rights when dealing with cameras and reporters.

Porth says the training session will be held in November and will touch on issues like public photography and interview consent.

Porth says the society’s goal is to make sure the sex trade workers feel safe in the neighbourhood in which they live.

She says media attention to the area, Vancouver’s notorious Downtown Eastside, can be less than compassionate and the society doesn’t want its members to feel like animals in a zoo.

The society held a similar training session leading up to the trial of convicted killer Robert Pickton.
