PITTSFORD, N.Y. — A dozen girls and women were secretly videotaped in the restroom of a suburban high school, and the head custodian has been suspended, according to school officials.
Pittsford Sutherland High School custodian Allen Wemes, 52, was suspended Nov. 26, and videotapes and computer disks were turned over to the Monroe County Sheriff’s Office, officials said. No charges were immediately filed, the Rochester Democrat and Chronicle reported in Thursday’s editions.
“It appears that the videotapes were taken from inside one female restroom at Sutherland high school and that the people on the videotapes were unaware they were being recorded,” Superintendent Mary Alice Price said in a prepared statement Wednesday. “This includes approximately 12 students and staff members.”
School officials said they checked all restrooms and locker rooms in district buildings for cameras.
Monroe County District Attorney Howard Relin said the sheriff’s office has given the case a high priority and the investigation will be wrapped up within the next 10 days. A new state law makes it illegal to record images of others in a place such as a restroom or bedroom where they have a reasonable expectation of privacy.
A woman who answered the phone at Wemes’ home said he didn’t want to speak to the press and had hired a lawyer.
