LOS ANGELES–Backers of the ’Yes on B’ campaign for Ballot Measure B, the so-called ‘condoms in porn’ measure in Los Angeles, welcomed the news that La Opinión, the largest Spanish language newspaper in the United States and second-most read paper in Los Angeles, has come out in support of Measure B.
“We believe that it is a matter of public health and recommend voting in favor,” said the paper an editorial urging citizens to vote ‘Yes’ on Measure B, the County of Los Angeles Safer Sex in the Adult Film Industry Act on November 6th. Spearheaded by AIDS Healthcare Foundation (AHF) and formally endorsed by the L.A. County Medical Association and the California STD Controllers Association, Measure B will require all adult film producers working in Los Angeles County to obtain public health permits from the County, follow all health and safety laws including condom use and availability on set and pay a permit fee to cover enforcement of the law.

“We thank La Opinión for this endorsement of Measure B and appreciate the fact that the paper’s editorial board had the good sense to see this measure for what it actually is: a matter of public health,” said Michael Weinstein, president of AIDS Healthcare Foundation (AHF) and one of the five named proponents of the ballot initiative. AHF is a major funder of the ballot measure.
“Operators of 134 other types of businesses and services in Los Angeles County—from barber shops to nail salons to tattoo parlors— must obtain permits or licenses as a condition of doing business in the County. For the health and safety of the performers working in the industry, it’s only fair that they are also afforded the same safeguards as other Californians in their workplaces that we believe Measure B will provide.”
In its editorial, which first appeared online on October 15, 2012, La Opinión wrote:
“La medida es impulsada por la Asociación Médica del condado y por organizaciones de prevención del SIDA. La industria se opone alegando que es mejor la “educación y concientización”. La ciudad de Los Ángeles ya aprobó una ordenanza similar y esta lo ampliaría a todas partes del condado. Pensamos que es un asunto de sanidad pública y recomendamos votar afirmativamente. Sí en la Proposición B.”
Translation: “The measure is supported by the [Los Angeles] County Medical Association and AIDS prevention organizations. The industry opposes it, claiming that ‘education and awareness’ are better. The City of Los Angeles adopted a similar ordinance and this would extend it to all parts of the County. We believe that it is a matter of public health and recommend voting in favor. ‘Yes on proposition B.'”
The ‘Vote Yes on B’ ballot measure, spearheaded by AIDS Healthcare Foundation (AHF) and members of FAIR (‘For Adult Industry Responsibility’), comes after as many as 22 HIV infections believed to be tied to the adult film industry were reported in two outbreaks in Los Angeles since 2004, and amidst thousands of sexually transmitted infections (STIs) occurring annually among adult performers. The ballot measure also comes at a time when an outbreak of syphilis, a highly contagious, but curable STI, is roiling L.A.’s adult film industry and shut down the entire industry for several weeks earlier this summer.
Over the next two weeks, organizers of ‘Vote Yes on B’ campaign have a 70-foot, 18-wheel big rig emblazoned with ‘Vote Yes on B’ on the sides touring to community events scheduled throughout Los Angeles County. The group plans to hand out one million free condoms along with voter information about measure B at the events.
