Nina Hartley comments on the following article: www.adultfyi.com/read.php?ID=56717

Gene,

I had a look at the item in which you featured me on your blog today and wanted to straighten out a couple of points of fact with you.

You have me saying that “porn is not sex education.” That is correct and I have said it, but you leave out the part that I invariably add. There is within porn a healthy educational sub-genere, ranging from my instructional videos, which you seem to think I’m running away from when I’m unlikely to run from anything that’s sold over a million copies, along with sexually explicit educational videos from people like Jessica Drake, Tristan Taormino and companies like the Sinclair Institute.

My point here is that porn has no *duty* to serve as the nation’s principle source of sex education. That is not its primary purpose any more than the primary purpose of HBO is identical to that of PBS.

Let me make it very clear that I am proud of the work that my colleagues and I have done in the area of adult sex education. I do not see this in any way as inconsistent with the work I’ve done in my 28+ years as an adult entertainer. To suggest otherwise is to represent both me and the facts on the ground.

And btw, the suggestion that Mr. Marcus and I should be co-presenters at the AVN Awards manages to be deeply offensive to people who are virtually inured to taking offense, such as myself.

As you well know, I’ve been extremely active with AIM, where I was a board member for a number of years, and in the industry in general when it comes to creating the highest level of safety possible. To suggest that I should participate in some dog and pony show that would ridicule those efforts, says nothing about me and everything about you.

Regards,

Nina Hartley

My response: Nina, I know, it’s hard to believe, but my article wasn’t so much about you, and the title says as much.

Didn’t we just go through a whole sturm und drang about Syphilis, STDs, testing and Measure B? But there it is. AVN has an award for an act that’s counterintuitive to all the precautions the adult industry says it takes to make it a safe harbor for performers. But how about the rest of the world which doesn’t follow those exacting protocols?

Your high-profile quote in the NY Times [which is how your name gets dragged into this discussion] says it’s risky. I can’t agree with you more.

Because it is what it is, porn and its mainstream-ification has gone beyond the role of entertainer to one of role model.

Little kids are watching this stuff now, and if they see porn stars ramming booty and dropping internal loads they think it’s cool.

In that “dream” pairing of you and Mr. Marcus as co-presenters, I was merely pointing out the absurdities of AVN’s politically insensitive award.

By the way, you may have noticed that over the years I employ a little appreciated art form known as sarcasm. If you have mistaken any of what I said particularly about the Adam & Eve vids for truism, I humbly apologize.

By the way, I notice that Adam & Eve is an advertiser on the AVN awards page, which to me, means they sanction this appalling category. Just an opinion.
