They’re just a few things on a long to-do list for local actor and comedian Matt Warzel, who’s put in many 19-hour days recently as a producer of the local independent film “Dale Archdale,” which begins production Friday. The raunchy comedy was co-written by Warzel and Shane Thompson, and features a role to be played by adult film star Ron Jeremy.

In addition to producing and co-funding the movie (the production has also gotten some crowd funding), Warzel is playing its title character. On the phone he sounds assured and prepared, with an attitude that reveals a guy itching to get in front of the camera.

“It’s been a journey. It’s exhausting,” Warzel said. “But I’m pumped to get started shooting on Friday.”

Warzel and Thompson hired former adult film star Jeremy to play Archdale’s father. Jeremy recently had a well-publicized hospital stay but Warzel doesn’t foresee a problem as Jeremy doesn’t arrive until early March.

“If he doesn’t make that date it’s no big deal. We’ll take him when we can,” Warzel said. “We only need him one day. It’s not anything I’m stressing over.”

This is Warzel’s first feature after making YouTube videos and a few short films. “Archdale” is ultimately a nod to comedies that inspired him like “Caddyshack” and “The Great Outdoors.” He views the production as his big chance to break into the film industry as a writer and actor.

“This is my last hurrah of trying to put everything into what I’ve got,” Warzel said. “I’ll keep writing, but getting an agent is another plan. My ultimate goal, I just want to be a screenwriter.”

“Dale Archdale” was first a short film selected by 2012’s Cape Fear Independent Film Festival. It’s an us-versus-them comedy but with the audacious sensibilities found in a show like HBO’s “Eastbound & Down,” which has filmed in the area.

The title character is carefree, a sarcastic type who doesn’t care about anything. He lives in a trailer and somehow gets lucky with housewives he does home repairs for. When he loses the trailer, Archdale is forced to shack up with his ex-wife and her brother at someone’s expensive home they’ve conned their way into. During a three-week stay, Archdale clashes with locals and eventually saves the day.

“He confronts all the richies and socialites,” Warzel said. “It’s playing the redneck against the elitist Southern crowd.”

Warzel studied screenwriting at the University of California at Los Angeles and says “Archdale” is rife with gags and outlandish bits like a mascot fighting with people, three-legged dogs, people on fire crashing through windows, nudity and even an animated intro that will be created by local comedy filmmakers Hank & Jed Movie Pictures. (Warzel does voice-over work for them.)

Warzel compares his script to other comedies, including “The Great Outdoors,” and John Cusack’s “One Crazy Summer.”

“My writing is (influenced by) comedies I grew up with,” Warzel said. “We’re hoping (‘Archdale’ is) an hour and a half wild ride.”

“Dale Archdale” is scheduled to wrap shooting in early March.
