WWW- [The Gazette] I have seen initiatives to make the Web more accessible to those with disabilities, but I would never, ever have anticipated this.
A site that offers, um, oral descriptions of porn clips for blind people is becoming a cult hit. Pornfortheblind.org (NOT SAFE FOR WORK) asks volunteers to record graphic but non-vulgar descriptions of adult videos so that the visually challenged can know what the fuss is all about.
According to the BBC’s Brazilian service (article in Portuguese), the site received 150,000 unique visitors so far this month. It was started in 2006, but really started growing last year when the site added a recording tool that works right on the page.
The site’s owner, who identified himself as Elmer, said the users are appreciative, but are asking for better quality recordings. Indeed, most of the narrations were made by men, and some sound like they’re doing it for yuks. Elmer would like more women with soft and sensual voices.
I couldn’t find much other coverage about the site, but a 2004 article from Fleshbot (some ads NSFW) cited a survey from the American Foundation for the Blind that found 22% of respondents were intersted in watching adult videos with audio descriptions.
And why not? Pornography is one of the most sought-after services online, and a major driver of new Web technologies. Some would say that’s what the Internet is for. But it’s a medium completely exclusive to fully-abled people. If the blind can get their kicks thanks to the verbal kindness of strangers, everybody wins.
