from www.mlive.com – A former substitute teacher for Bay City Public Schools accused of having sex with three of her students is due back in court tomorrow.
Heidi L. Lewis, 42, is charged with six counts of third-degree criminal sexual conduct with a student, a charge punishable by up to 15 years in prison. She is scheduled to appear for a preliminary examination before Bay County District Judge Dawn A. Klida at 8:30 a.m. tomorrow.
Lewis, of Midland, taught British literature at Bay City Central High School from January 2010 until school let out in early June. Prosecutors allege she had sex with three of her 17-year-old male students in that span.
Police and school authorities began investigating Lewis in January 2011, when a female student told Assistant Principal Joseph Buggs her boyfriend had claimed to have had sex with Lewis.
Lewis was arrested Jan. 28 and arraigned the following day. She is free on a $100,000 cash-surety bond.
Though the age of consent for sexual intercourse in Michigan is 16, it is increased to 18 if the participants are a student and a teacher, substitute teacher or administrator of the school the student attends.
Lewis is represented by Midland attorney Richard L. Lee Jr.
