from www2.wspa.com – Abby McElhenny, 23, is charged with sexual battery with a student.
McElhenny resigned her position as a Spanish teacher at Boiling Springs High School on Tuesday school officials said.
The warrant states that between Dec. 25, 2010 and May 16, 2011, McElhenny engaged in sexual battery with a male student. The warrant states “aggravated coercion or aggravated force was not used to accomplish the sexual battery.”
During a news conference with Spartanburg County Sheriff Chuck Wright, Wright said his office got a complaint of an inappropriate relationship between a 16-year-old Boiling Springs High student and a Spanish teacher there.
Wright says the relationship came to light when the student’s parents found out he was lying about spending the night with a friend.
Wright says the student’s parents checked his phone and found messages to an unknown number.
Investigators examined phone records and found text messages between the teacher and the student. Wright says in one five-day period, 391 text messages were sent.
Wright says the teenager’s parents had a friend who called the number and pretended to sell a newspaper subscription. That’s when, Wright says, they found out about the teacher.
Wright says McElhenny, who taught Spanish and coached varsity swimming at the school, admitted to the relationship.
Wright says the relationship happened off campus.
The Sheriff’s Office says McElhenny turned herself in Wednesday afternoon. She is originally from Pennsylvania.
She bonded out of jail Wednesday night, covered in a black sheet, and refused to answer questions about her arrest.
