ICM Registry has penned in a proposed launch date of September 7th 2011 for the new .XXX top level domain name.
The .XXX domain name was first approved by the Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers (ICANN) in March of this year, and long-time adult industry proponent ICM was picked as the registrar for the new web address suffix.
Now, ICM has set out a timetable for the launch of the new top level domain name, which ICANN hopes will allow for better regulation of the adult entertainment industry.
On September 7th, ICM will launch its Sunrise A allocation period, in which adult entertainment firms with trademark rights will be allowed to apply for .XXX domain names.
The Sunrise A auction process will be open to owners of existing domain names – including .com and .co.uk websites – that offer adult entertainment.
This will be followed by the Sunrise B period, which will be aimed at firms wanting to block the use of their verifiable trademarks in .XXX domain names.
In October, members of the entertainment industry will be able to bid on additional domain names in the .XXX space and by December 6th the bidding process will be opened out to the general public on a first-come, first-served basis.
In the UK, Easyspace, an official partner of the ICM Registry, is already offering firms the chance to register their interest for .XXX top level domain names ahead of the official launch.
