from www.mtv.com – Mackenzie Phillips made a stunning appearance Wednesday (September 23) on “The Oprah Winfrey Show,” speaking at length about her claim to have had a decade-long incestuous affair with her father, John Phillips of the Mamas and the Papas. During the show, “Oprah” aired excerpts of a statement from Mackenzie’s stepmother, Genevieve Waite Phillips, who was married to John when the abuse allegedly occurred.
In the comments, Waite Phillips denied the possibility of such an incestuous affair.
“I am stunned by Mackenzie’s terrible allegations about her father,” read the statement. “I would often complain to John about her overly familiar attitude toward him and he would tell me that was just her way.
“John was a good man, who had the disease of alcoholism and drug addiction,” the statement continued. “He was incapable, no matter how drunk or drugged he was, of having such a relationship with his own child.”
The quote was read in a voice-over by Winfrey as the show went to a station break; Mackenzie was not asked for comment on it.
In her explosive new book, “High on Arrival,” Mackenzie says her father shot her up with cocaine when she was a teenager and raped her at the age of 18. According to Mackenzie, their relationship eventually became consensual. While he was on his death bed, Mackenzie said she forgave her father for the abuse.
“I [told him], ‘Dad we’ve been through a lot and I said I would not be the woman I am had I not been your daughter and I’m very proud of the woman I am,’ ” she recalled to Oprah. “And I said I love you and forgive you and writing this book I wanted to earn the right to speak about forgiveness.”
