California – from www.computerandvideogames.com – The US games industry is going to battle with the state of California in the US today, with the controversial ‘games as porn’ bill set to be reviewed by the Supreme Court.
The 2005 statute, which aims to prohibit the sale to minors of any game containing content deemed offensively violent by the state of California, is about to go before the Supreme Court despite being deemed unconstitutional at federal level on multiple occasions.
If deemed constitutional, it would allow individual states to impose sales restrictions on violent games – effectively putting them into the same category as pornography, and preventing their sale to adult citizens.
The law, which is backed by California governor Arnold Schwarzenegger, has been slammed by worried bosses of major games publishers.
