Update: Model Murders 101: Jasmine Fiore Killing Had a Jerry’s Deli Parallel

The Jasmine Fiore murder case reminds me of a similar one several years ago involving a patron from Jerry’s Deli in Woodland Hills. There you had a dead model whose body was disposed of, domestic violence, a millionaire, a Mercedes-Benz, the perp fleeing the country, a complicated relationship involving other people and now the perp being found dead in a motel room.

Brian Joseph Cullen, aka Mark Corbett, a 58 year-old man who murdered his 21 year-old Ukranian girlfriend Iryna Singerman in July, 2005 with a baseball bat, would come into Jerry’s on Saturday afternoons- sometimes with his young son, and sit at the bar.

Cullen always had the pricey New York strip steak. Other than ordering a $40 item from a deli menu, there was something else very strange about him, and I wasn’t the only one who picked up on the creep vibe. Cullen always appeared very fidgety and never volunteered any information about himself.

Then, when it was reported in the LA papers that he was on the lam in Mexico for the murder, things all somehow seemed to fit. After a police manhunt of several weeks, Cullen’s body was found in a Tijuana hotel. He had shot himself fatally in the head.

Cullen, who was also married to a 34 year-old woman named Belen, checked into Tijuana’s Hotel El Gigante Del Guaycura alone, two days before a hotel staff member found his body.

Coincidentally, Mexican police detained Bellen Cullen three days after they had found Singerman’s decomposed body at a Valley storage facility. Employees at the business told police that on July 26, a man identifying himself as Cullen paid them three months’ rent on a storage unit and said he was “going away for a long time.”

While being stopped by the cops for an accident, Bellen Cullen was found to be driving a Ford Focus, the car Cullen used to dispose of two bags of bloody evidence. She posted bail and, to my knowledge, dropped off the face of the earth. Cops believe she may have assisted Cullen in disposing the body.

Cullen, a millionaire, served five years in prison for mail and wire fraud, and had previously lived in Mexico.

Police began a manhunt for Cullen after a witness saw him drive up to a trash bin in a Woodland Hills parking lot, put on rubber gloves and throw away garbage bags full of bloody evidence. A bloody baseball bat and some of Iryna Singerman’s financial documents were found.

Police identified Cullen by using surveillance video from a nearby business that captured him driving out of the parking lot.

They determined that blood-stained documents in the bags belonged to Singerman, who moved to Southern California after marrying Ron Singerman, 50, a West Los Angeles accountant.

Singerman and her husband met a year prior through an agency that matches American men with Russian women. Singerman apparently knew nothing about his wife’s double life and believed her when she said modeling work kept her away from their home. Singerman had a modeling portfolio, but police were unaware of any modeling jobs she held.

On July 27, police searched Cullen’s large rented home in Woodland Hills and found blood and evidence of a struggle.

Police also discovered that Cullen had access to millions of dollars and several cars through three companies owned by him and his relatives.

Police later found Singerman’s body and her purse hidden in Cullen’s Ford F-150 pickup truck at a Winnetka storage facility Aug. 2, and Cullen was charged with murder Aug. 11.

During the investigation, authorities learned that Iryna Singerman had been dating Cullen for months. Cullen’s neighbors said she spent most weekends at Cullen’s house in the 5000 block of Medina Road.

She bought a 2005 gold Mercedes-Benz without her husband’s knowledge and kept it at Cullen’s home.

Ronald Singerman didn’t know she bought the car until he received insurance information in the mail.

Iryna Singerman was taking real-estate classes, and she and Cullen were in the process of buying a house together in Northridge, possibly as an investment.

Neighbors and co-workers had described Cullen as a private man with a bit of a temper. He worked as an independent contract for Coupon Adventure, a mass-mailing company based in Chatsworth.

“He always seemed very enthusiastic and he did a great job for the company,” said Coupon Adventure owner Bruce Bromberg, had said. “We’re very shocked and saddened by the events that have come down. It was not the Brian Cullen we knew.”

Neighbors said Cullen was in good shape and frequently sported a navy blue blazer or a gold sweat suit and always wore a gold medallion.

“When you’d first look at him, you’d think porn or swinger,” one neighbor said. “It’s disturbing, because I thought he was just nice. People I meet now, I’m wondering, Oh, my God, what other side do they have?”

Cullen’s apparent suicide left one key question unanswered- why Singerman was murdered in the first place. The speculation was domestic violence.
