from www.dailymail.co.uk – Several NFL players had a lucky escape from a ‘catfishing’ scheme after they came close to being duped into online relationships with a woman who was not who she said she was, it was revealed today.

A female fan used the name Sidney Ackerman to contact several Washington Redskins’ players trying to tempt them into cyber relationships.

Some team members allegedly tried to meet up with Ackerman, who used the Twitter account @RedRidnH00d, but were deterred by her.

Redskins management became suspicious and after some digging, discovered that ‘Ackerman’ had actually used the photograph of C.J. Miles – a porn star.

Coaches put up memos in the team’s locker-room telling players to avoid contact with Ackerman.

The Twitter account and Facebook was allegedly run by a female Redskins fan – who also sent players pornographic videos of Miles.

According to an NFL investigation, players were almost convinced by Ackerman because she had 17,000 followers on Twitter. The account has since been deleted.

The scam came to light following revelations earlier this month that Notre Dame linebacker Manti Te’o had allegedly been scammed into have an online relationship with a woman whom he believed had died of leukaemia.

Te’O has claimed that he knew nothing until the last minute of an elaborate hoax by Ronaiah Tuiasosopo – who created a fake woman Lennay Kekua using an actual person called Diane O’Meara.

The online scam is known as ‘catfishing’ – someone who assumes a false identity on social media to lure others into relationships.

However Redskins coach Phillip Daniels said that the hoax which had pulled in several of his players did not appear to have been as great a deception as the Kekua scheme.

Daniels told NFL.com: ‘I think it was all about attention. I don’t think it was any of the other stuff. It was just about being able to talk to them, pretending to be someone they aren’t.

He added: ‘But you’re talking about a lot of guys who are single. I don’t fault the guys. I fault the people who are doing this crazy stuff, causing these problems.’
