Iceland already bans the printing and distribution of pornography so it wasn’t surprising when the announcement was made this week that it’s also considering a policy that would use Internet filters to prevent downloading or viewing pornography.
The new ban could go into effect as early as April. If so, it would make Iceland the first Western democracy to attempt to censor the Internet.
Lawmakers say the proposed measures would be justified by the fact that the ban would reduce damage and harm to women and children.
When curbs on sexual freedom are attempted or employed, women and children, invariably, are whipped out as the bogeymen.
One of porn’s original milfs, Charlie Latour, a Philly girl, by the way, adds a few thoughts over this morning’s cup of coffee. She writes:
“The effort in Iceland to ban and block adult content on the internet caught my attention. In my frequent encounters with porn loving Americans through adult events, swing meets and similar outings the fear of internet restrictions is real and across the political spectrum. Recent efforts to give the President the ability to “shut off” the internet really charged them up. Now with the Europeanization of America this effort in Iceland rings a very loud bell. Are we sliding into an abyss like other countries?
“How and why we do things is only important to those it impacts. This is why this event is worth watching. It has future impact potential. It is not about what happened in the past, although I could draw some very scary parallels, but how it will impact future generations.
“It is not about political affiliations, rather it is how we treat our
Constitutional rights. I talk with many people all of the time and they come from a broad spectrum of political beliefs, and they are ALL concerned.
“Guarding our freedoms is harder than many want to admit. It is easy to ‘go along to get along’ but hard to stand by principles and values. There is no such benefit as ‘Free’, it all comes with a price and if that price is our freedoms then ‘Free’ is not ‘Free’.
“I know Iceland due to family who spent time there as missionaries (my Dad was a preacher) and they have said how determined the population is to remain culturally ‘pure’, while living in a utopian state.
“They understand that as a population of 319,000 this might be possible, although giving up rights and freedoms is never acceptable, but as a nation of 300 Million we must protect our freedoms to survive, or we will quickly become Communist China. In that case those who most loudly promoted the idea of giving up freedoms for government control may never get a chance to complain when the government decides they are no longer acceptable and censor them. (or worse).”
