Amazon Under Fire for Selling Vintage Traci Lord’s Porn

Seattle- from www.seattleweekly.com – To this day, Traci Lords remains one of the most iconic names in porn. The Ohio-born blonde bombshell first entered the adult-entertainment industry in 1984 with films like Those Young Girls, Hot Pink, and Lust in the Fast Lane.

In 1984, however, Lords was no adult. She was 16 years old. And when word got out that she was a minor, the news rocked the adult-film industry and eventually elevated Lords to household-name status.

So what became of Lords’ underage porn work? Well, it’s still around. In fact, you can buy some of it on Amazon right now.

We know where the law stands on selling porn featuring girls under 16. But is there a difference if, at the time of publication, people didn’t know (or didn’t admit they knew) she was 16?

The answer appears to be “no.”

Lords and executives of the porn companies she worked for were arrested in 1986. The ensuing prosecution forced publishers to remove thousands of films and magazines from the shelves. Meanwhile, Washington state law says that a person is guilty of a class B felony if he or she:

(i) Knowingly develops, duplicates, publishes, prints, disseminates, exchanges, finances, attempts to finance, or sells a visual or printed matter that depicts a minor engaged in an act of sexually explicit conduct as defined in RCW 9.68A.011(4) (a) through (e); or

(ii) Possesses with intent to develop, duplicate, publish, print, disseminate, exchange, or sell any visual or printed matter that depicts a minor engaged in an act of sexually explicit conduct as defined in RCW 9.68A.011(4) (a) through (e).

U.S. law also prohibits sending, sharing, selling, or otherwise distributing child porn.

King County Prosecutor Dan Satterberg’s office refused to comment on whether Amazon or the sellers who own the old magazines might be breaking the law. Amazon, meanwhile, has yet to return calls seeking comment on whether the company knows that Lords is underage in the magazines and whether sellers could be asked to remove listings. But the FBI says this kind of case is certainly something its agents could look into.

“This is the kind of thing we could investigate,” says Ayn Dietrich, spokesperson for the FBI’s field office in Seattle.

“Any child pornography can be a crime if it’s sent by mail. The Amazon sale could fall under that category.”

To be sure, barring complicit knowledge of the sales, it would be the seller that would be prosecuted and not Amazon.

Whatever the case, the magazines represent a unique issue surrounding the dissemination of banned merchandise. The publications have already been printed, and at this point they are essentially being sold as collectors’ items.

Lords herself is today a successful actress, director, singer, and producer, and would appear to be suffering no ill effects from any leftover sales of her old underage porn. But judging by the response of the FBI, no exceptions are given just because certain child porn happens to be old and oddly historic.
