ACWORTH, GA — Acworth Police are crediting an alert store manager for catching 22-year-old David Roy Burd, Jr. [pictured] in the act…and on video. Burd is accused of fondling himself near women customers at the Auto Buff’s Car Wash on Highway 41 and Mars Hill Road in broad daylight Tuesday.
When a customer alerted manager Vince Runco, he pointed security cameras at Burd and recorded what was happening. He then gave chase, but Burd fled in a car. Thanks to Runco’s quick thinking and getting a license number, Acworth Police traced Burd to his mother’s home in Paulding County where they arrested him Thursday night.
Police soon discovered that this was Burd’s third arrest on similar charges. Last year he was charged with indecent exposure in Paulding County and earlier this year for indecent exposure and sexual battery in Cobb County. And they suspect he may have committed more offenses.
“Keep in mind, this is just what we have on tape,” says Acworth Police Sgt. Wayne Dennard. “There’s no telling what’s out there that we don’t know about, or never will know about.”
That doesn’t sit well with the man credited with catching him either.
“As brash as he was about the whole thing, and as weak as the judicial system is on people like him — sexual predators and all, I won’t be surprised if he’s out in a couple of days, doing it again,” says car wash manager Runco.
It’s likely Burd may soon be back on the street. That’s because his indecent exposure charge is only a misdemeanor and because his bond is set at only $1,500. He’s expected to appear before a Cobb County Magistrate Judge later today.
