With all the cracking down by the Federal Communications Commission [FCC] over obscenity on the airwaves, it reminds me of why I chose to leave a $150k a year job and go into internet radio.
Ya see, I got into broadcast radio because it was once a lot of fun. Programmers used to let talent be themselves and personalities were hired because of their personality, not because they read good liner cards and did blasé shows. After about six years in my twelve year broadcast career, I noticed a very rapid change in the system. Management-Free radio became Corporate radio where Deejays had to answer to the guys in the suits as opposed to the free thinkin’, t-shirt wearin’ program directors.
People, especially mainstream radio folks, constantly ask me, “Wankus, why did you leave such a promising career in radio to become a porn-internet host?” The answer is easy. I was sick of all the bullshit and I wanted to make sure my career was fun. Even dropping in income by many tiers, my persona is much more happy and that holds way more value to me then being a big radio star on an over-controlled station.
