WWW- Viewing pornography on the internet could get more costly with a new bill proposing a 25 percent federal tax. Democratic Sen. Blanche Lincoln is introducing the Internet Safety and Child Protection Act of 2005 today. The bill would impose the tax on transactions with for-profit adult web sites that sell monthly subscriptions. Money collected would be used for law enforcement and protecting children from internet-related crimes. The bill will also propose new and more stringent rules for such web sites to verify that customers are indeed adults, using specialized software to verify a user’s age.
Lincoln plans to make the Wednesday announcement with Sens. Tom Carper, D-Del.; Mark Pryor, D-Ark; Mary Landrieu, D-La.; Joe Lieberman, D-Conn.; Debbie Stabenow, D-Mich.; and Ken Salazar, D-Colo.; as well as Rep. Jim Matheson, D-Utah and Rep. Robert Menendez, D-N.J.
