from www.pottsmerc.com – A Daniel Boone Area High School teacher has been charged with allegedly having sex with a 15-year-old male student on several occasions at her Berks County home, according to authorities.
Kristy Risell, 31, of 2104 Orchard View Road, Exeter, has been charged with statutory sexual assault, institutional sexual assault, indecent assault, indecent exposure and related offenses. She was released on $20,000 unsecured bail pending a preliminary hearing.
According to the Berks County District Attorney’s office, the investigation into Risell’s alleged misconduct started after Exeter Township Police received a report that a 15-year-old boy was sexually abused by his teacher between January and April 2012.
Authorities said the “relationship” started with text message communication and Risell later arranged “private meetings with the victim at her home in Exeter Township.”
In March 2012, Risell allegedly picked the boy up from his home and drove him to her residence where she “engaged in sexual activity” with him.
Berks County detectives obtained the arrest warrant for Risell on Thursday and Risell surrendered to detectives around 11 a.m. Thursday morning.
Berks County Chief County Detective Michael J. Gombar said there is “an awareness of these incidents and victims are coming forward” more often these days, referring to sex assault charges.
He said it’s important for parents to be talking with their children and checking their text messages and making sure that they’re apprised of the happenings in their children’s lives.
Gombar said parents should talk to their children about the importance of coming forward if they know something is going on at school involving their peers because the children in these situations are the victims
“What these kids must realize is they’re young and they are victims and your friend is a victim so you need to go to a responsible adult and tell them what you heard as a result that should be passed on to an authority, a teacher or law enforcement,” Gombar said.
